#JustaQuickiePlease: The Magnificent Seven (2016) Review

Training Day director Antoine Fuque successfully reunites Washington and Hawke and joins them with a stellar cast to present a masterful retelling of one of the most iconic cinematic westerns of all time.   Most reboots fall flat; this incredibly crafted update wins on every level with authentic performances, well timed and ingenious humor, rich characterizations, riveting action sequences, and stunning cinematography.   Pratt excels, as does D'Onofrio and the remaining ensemble, with Sarsgaard nicely rounding off the group as the utterly believable and wonderfully despicable villain.   My only complaint, we weren't able to explore these incredible incarnations in more depth, but runtime and storytelling simply couldn't afford it.  Today, Westerns are a hard sell, its unfortunate but true.  This film charges through that stigma like a stampeded of wild stallions.  5 out of 5 Kernels: This is how the west is won!

#JustaQuickiePlease: The Finest Hours Review

An amazingly accurate film representation of the most dangerous and heroic Coast Guard mission of all time.  Pine plays yet another captain, but truly embraces this role and sells it with passion and authenticity.   The remaining cast is solid, with only a few stale performances.  The most disappointing is Pine's love interest Holliday Grainger who is as cold as a winter tempest without any of its excitement. The special effects are incredible, so realistic I felt the chill of both the storm and sea.  Historic cinematic recountings are either incredibly stiff or indisputably compelling, with little middle ground.  Thankfully, this is the latter by all counts.  4 out of 5 Kernels: A well-told tale, filled with heart, hope, and hazard; keeping you at the edge of your seat until the very last minutes.

4.0 out of 5 stars
Nice storyline, Strong Characters, Very Imaginative
By Amazon Customer on September 14, 2016
Format: Paperback
This is a very large book. As an avid reader, the size of a book doesn't normally phase me. It took me about 3 months to finish this one. I truly enjoyed the storyline. The biggest issue I had with following this was that the beginning was so heavy with character details; they were introduced and would then disappear for a while. When the character reemerged, I had to go back for a refresher. I loved the detail in describing the characters. The author made his vision very clear throughout the book. I appreciated the obvious respect for the female characters, showing them as strong and not helpless. The beginning part of the book felt like it was dragging because of the heavy detail, but once past all that I was on the edge of my seat to find out what was coming next. Overall this is worth reading whether you're a science fiction fan or not. I am looking forward to the second book!

#JustaQuickiePlease: The Jill Tales Teaser Comic Review

There aren't a plethora of new titles filling the shelves of your local comic shop; as most are inundated with a glut of reboots and reimaginings as opposed to original, edgy, and quality storytelling.  Gregbo Watson's The Jill Tales, however, is a refreshing new concept that infuses local lore with stunning illustrations and quirky humor to a market saturated with the status quo masquerading as innovation and diversity.  The pace, tone, and artistry invokes the nostalgia of such classics as Johnny Quest while definitively invoking an Indian Jones/Tomb Raider palpation.  Now, keep in mind, this is a teaser, so its plot is base, but still extraordinarily entertaining with an intriguing sneak peak at the origins of the central character.   The coolest element of this virgin series, however, is its authentic attempt to create a strong feminine character who connects with audiences by successfully presenting a sincerely intelligent, powerful, and beautiful woman instead of an hyper-sexualized stereotype who feels more like she is written by an oversexed male rather than an artist who is truly trying to capture the complexity of the female spirit.  This is a comic I would be proud to let my daughter read, and if you know me, that says a lot.  My only complaint is that I would have loved to see this presented in full color, but being an introduction to the franchise, I fully understand the logic behind that decision.  I can't wait to see what Gregbo Watson does in the official first and then following editions.  4 out of 5 Kernels: look out world, Jill is kicking down the doors of the clichéd and boring and taking names.

#JustaQuickiePlease: Jungle Book (2016) Review

I hate remakes.  I detest reboots even more.  So, I went into this with little expectation that it would arrive anywhere in the neighborhood of being watchable.   I am very proud to report, my cynicism was quickly and easily discredited.    Although, not a fan of the books, this cinematic incarnation that mixes a definitive respect for the source material and homage to Disney's animated classic, delivers a heartfelt, visually stunning, and utterly endearing theatrical journey.   With a remarkable cast, providing truly inspired performances, surprising yet appropriate musical interludes, and breathtaking effects, this live-action retelling kept me riveted to my seat from start to finish.  4 out of 5 Kernels; this film is a "bear" necessity for any fan of good cinema, both the young, and young at heart.

#JustaQuickiePlease: The Secret Life of Pets Review

The director of Despicable Me and its sequel, bring us a subtle and sweet story of friendship and loyalty.  This is one of the few animated films where I actually laughed out loud.  With a stellar cast, amazing GCI, genuine humor, and a well-crafted script, that delivers its moral in a sincere and soft way, this is a win for both parents and their tykes alike.  One of the best kids flicks of the last decade.  4 out of 5 Kernels: this film is man's, I mean the audience's best friend.

#JustaQuickiePlease: The Huntsman: Winter's War Review

Lord of the Rings light meets angry Elsa, should have been the title of this prequel; that really isn't a prequel to the 2012 film of virtually the same name, we just subtracted Snow White.  Kristen Stewart made the wisest move of her career by avoiding this cinematic disaster, plagued with hackneyed storytelling and special effects that seemingly missed the last minute polishing of post-production.  Chris Hemsworth does his best to escape his Thor typecasting by returning as the ax-wielding Huntsman with a serious Sean Connery crush.   Also returning, is Charlize Theron, as the Wicked Queen, who takes her gold fetish to a whole other level.  Her smooth and sophisticated evilness is the only highlight of this epic fail while Emily Blunt's accidental Frozen parody only validates how silly this film so quickly becomes.   Rounding out the main players is Jessica Chastain who is the literal cure for insomnia thanks to her insufferably stale performance.  The whole movie feels like an afterthought, shoddily pieced together to create a dull fantasy that no one asked for or wanted.  The prequelness only lasts about thirty minutes and then we begin a confusing journey, dragging us, kicking and screaming, to an anti-climatic, overtly predictable ending that hints at (the heart be still) a possible trilogy.  The moral of the story is that love conquers all.  The reality is that neither love or anything else could have stopped this train wreck from happening.  0 out 5 Kernels: we couldn't even get seven dwarfs, just four, and I have no idea who the hell they were...but the plot and acting sure was Dopey.
